"Building science is becoming an important part of the construction process.

Why?

Because of two opposing principles - moisture and energy efficiency

It use to be you could build and a structure would last for years and years. You rarely heard of mold or deterioration from rotting from the inside out. However the homes were not overly air tight. The wind could easily blow through and dry everything. Then came the energy crunch and the term energy efficiency. Today we have Energuide®, Enerbuild®, Energreen®, Built Green ®... etc etc... not that there is anything wrong with green.

The goal of energy efficiency is to stop the air movement through a structure, making it more efficient and cost effective to keep warm... but this also stopped the natural drying ability. Add to this the change in heating systems such as high efficient furnaces. New materials that are less resistant to mold and fungal growth. And finally no mandatory continuing education to explain to our many skilled tradespeople why the old methods just don't work anymore... and you have potential for massive building failures.

That means a change in thinking and technique, which means a need to understand the science.

I started Qualistat in 1986, but my construction career began in 1978.  Through those years, we have built hundreds of wood frame structures from single family to multi family and small commercial buildings. Over the past ten years I have studied building science and envelope issues and taken considerable training in these and related areas.  I now also train others in these areas as well as provide a full range of consulting services.

I understand the issues related to building science, partly because I have experienced them and partly because I have learned why they occur and how to prevent them.

Let me share my expertise with you"
